Recording Big Ideas for Small Housing

Project Overview
Elkplan provided graphic recording services during the Gentle Density Local Leaders' Summit held in Vancouver, BC, hosted by Small Housing BC.

Purpose
The primary goal of the summit was to provide a platform for municipal planners, elected officials, and community leaders from across the province to engage in collaborative workshops and knowledge sharing, focusing on the challenges and opportunities surrounding gentle density housing. Elkplan visually captured the key discussions and ideas generated throughout the day, providing a real-time visual summary of the various challenges, and strategies being employed in communities across the province.

Outcomes
Our graphic recordings captured the diverse range of perspectives and actionable strategies that emerged during the summit, including innovative approaches to overcoming challenges for gentle density projects. Drawing on Elkplan’s background in urban planning, the illustrations clearly communicate building forms, densities, lot configurations, and planning terminology, making them especially useful for professional and technical audiences in the planning field.

Impacts
The graphic recordings from the summit helped to consolidate the key themes and outcomes from the event, and advance the conversation around missing middle housing. They also supported relationship building by visually capturing shared priorities and collaborative ideas, fostering continued dialogue beyond the summit. The visuals served as a valuable tool for participants to refer back to, connecting participants to the solutions and suggestions discussed during the summit.
